Making an impact in 2018

Over the past year, access to safe abortion has been debated all around the world, including in the New South Wales state parliament. Our work in the Asia Pacific and further afield is making it easier for women to access safe abortion, comprehensive reproductive health services and family planning, often in stigmatised and restricted environments.

Our 2018 Global Impact data has been released, and shows that despite the US administration’s attempts at creating a global environment that is hostile to safe abortions and comprehensive family planning, last year our global network worked to prevent 6.4 million unsafe abortions and 12.3 million unintended pregnancies.

Importantly, in 2018, 81% of our clients were ‘high impact’, which means they were either adolescents, not using any contraception, living in extreme poverty or would have had no other option of receiving their service if it had not been for MSI.

Key information from the report:

  • By the end of 2018, over 30 million people worldwide were using a contraceptive method provided by MSI.
  • Our outreach programs in sub-Saharan Africa travelled more than 12 million kilometres to provide remote communities with essential family planning services.
  • In 2018, our fastest growing area was Public Sector Strengthening, where we partner with governments to build the capacity of public health programs to deliver high quality contraception and safe abortion care services at public hospitals and clinics.
