Knowledge is power: students learn about choice to protect their dreams

On a sunny morning in Bougouni, Mali, MSI visited Kalilou Fofana High School to talk to students about contraception. Tucked behind a high gate shaded by tall trees, the school is full of young people with big dreams. An unplanned pregnancy could derail their carefully made plans.

Every year, millions of girls face pregnancy too early. For girls, it can be very dangerous – pregnancy complications are a leading cause of death for 15-19-year-olds in Africa.

MSI team member Lassana Farota led a fun session with a classroom full of high schoolers answering questions about their bodies and contraception myths.

Many of these young people have big plans. We spoke to Oumou, who advocates against gender-based violence in her community, and Gali, who’s studying for a career in science.

For the students at Kalilou Fofana Public High School, who now know where to go for the contraception they want, the future is bright. Equipped with knowledge and access to sexual and reproductive healthcare, they can focus on achieving their dreams.

Generous support from people like you make that possible. Thank you.
