Women line up at the mobile tent for reproductive health services at the clinic in Nyamatikiti, Mashonaland Central Province, Zimbabwe. 19 September 2024..Five of MSI Zimbabwe’s outreach teams are fully funded by USAID. If Donald J. Trump wins the US presidential election for the Republican Party, then it is expected that he will reintroduce the Mexico City Policy or Global Gag Rule as it is known (GGR). The GGR blocks US Government funding for international organisations that deliver, provide information on, advocate for, or even refer people to abortion care. MSI Reproductive Choices has never and will never sign onto this policy, so if Donald J. Trump wins the election, this work in Zimbabwe will likely lose funding and need to stop. If Kamala Harris wins the election for the Democratic Party however, then funding is expected to continue, and these outreach teams will continue to provide essential healthcare services to women and girls in hard-to-reach communities.

A global setback: the impact of Trump’s aid cuts on reproductive rights

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is one of the world’s largest providers of global health funding. But Trump’s devastating cuts to USAID funding are putting millions at risk.

These cuts are an attack on reproductive rights, stripping away essential healthcare from those who need it most. Despite these challenges, MSI refuses to back down. We will fight to ensure reproductive choice and access to care for everyone.

What’s happening?

The Trump administration is slashing billions in foreign aid funding, gutting critical reproductive healthcare services. MSI has already lost $14 million USD in USAID funding, directly impacting services in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. This means 2.6 million people—many with no other options—could lose access to contraception and safe abortion care. Women and girls are being abandoned, their rights disregarded, their futures stolen.

The big picture

Simply put, the impact of cuts to USAID means fewer contraceptives, more unintended pregnancies, and fewer reproductive choices all over the world. An estimated 130,000 women will lose access to contraception every day, potentially affecting 11.7 million women and girls over three months. This isn’t just about numbers – these are real people whose health, dignity, and lives are on the line.

Our commitment

We will not stay silent while reproductive rights are rolled back. MSI has spent over 45 years fighting for choice, and we will not stop now. We will continue to provide life-saving reproductive healthcare, push back against dangerous policies, and ensure that every person has control over their own body and future.
