For four years, Norefa has been helping families across his island home of Papua New Guinea.
As an MSI nurse, he brings life-changing care to people who need it most. He calls his work lifesaving, and he’s right.
“I see rural communities at all angles – their joys and struggles,” he says. “Most of the families have five or six children that they can’t afford to feed because they face many pregnancies. Some mothers suffer pregnancy complications like losing blood, haemorrhaging, and can go into shock and die.”
Norefa travels far to reach people living in remote villages: places with no clinics, no doctors, and no access to contraception. Without help from MSI, many women face dangerous pregnancies, or go through unsafe abortions that can take their lives.
Every two minutes, a woman somewhere in the world dies from pregnancy or childbirth. Another 22,000 women die each year because of unsafe abortion. These are not just numbers – they are mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.
But there is hope.
“I have seen changes in these communities – people understanding the benefits of family planning, children who have grown healthy and well,” Norefa says. “That’s what we are doing: creating healthy families.”
Because of passionate people like Norefa and our generous donors, MSI has saved an estimated 300,000 lives in the last ten years. Without us, pregnancy-related deaths would be 15% higher in the places where we work.

But saving lives is just the beginning. When a woman can choose if or when to have children, she can take charge of her future. She can stay in school, plan her family, follow her dreams. One small contraceptive method can give her freedom, safety, and hope.
